Let me walk you through what happened in the LAST 24 HOURS ALONE, because no one is putting it all together for you:

    • Dozens of loaded oil tankers are stuck inside — too scared to move
    • Iranian missiles, drones, and mines have turned it into a death trap 
    • 20% of the world's oil flows through this ONE chokepoint 
    • It is now effectively CLOSED 
  • OIL IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE. 
    • Qatar's Energy Minister just said oil could hit $150 A BARREL in 2-3 weeks
    • Brent crude already at $89 and climbing 
    • Qatar shut down the Ras Laffan LNG facility — one of the biggest on earth 
    • Europe is about to lose a massive chunk of its gas supply 
    • Jet fuel already up 70% this week 
  • THE SKY IS CLOSED
    • 20,000+ flights cancelled across the Middle East 
    • Thousands of passengers STRANDED 
    • Airlines can't fly — fuel too expensive, airspace too dangerous
    • Global air travel disrupted — not just the region 
  • THE WAR IS EXPANDING
    • Bombs falling on central Tehran — video showing explosions across the capital 
    • Iran firing cluster ballistic missiles at Israel — a new escalation 
    • Israeli strikes pounding Beirut suburbs and eastern Lebanon 
    • UK deploying jets to Qatar to defend Bahrain from Iranian strikes 
    • Germany warning of mass migration from Iran 
    • Iran's former crown prince asking Arab leaders to recognize a transitional government — regime change is on the table 
  • THE MONEY IS BLEEDING
    • $2 TRILLION wiped from US markets since Monday 
    • South Korea's market crashed 8% — circuit breaker triggered 
    • Gulf states discussing pulling ALL investments from America 
    • Qatar's energy minister: "This war could bring down the economies of the world" 
    • US Navy now escorting commercial ships — like it's World War II 
  • AND THE WORST PART? 
    • The US burned through 5 YEARS of Tomahawk missiles in 3 days 
    • Pentagon asking Congress for $50 BILLION to restock 
    • Iran is using $20,000 drones that cost $2 MILLION each to intercept 
    • US bombed DECOY targets and published the video thinking it was real 
    • 50,000 US troops locked in — largest buildup in a generation

This is Day 8. Day EIGHT. 

Oil could be $150 in two weeks. 

The Strait is closed.

Flights are grounded. 

Markets are crashing. 

Nations are threatening to pull out. 

And a world leader just looked into a camera and said: "Even if the war ended today — the damage is done." 

This is not a regional conflict. This is the beginning of a global economic crisis. And we are only on Day 8.

I dug out some depressing numbers from the CRM world: only 30% of companies with a CRM implementation feel that they've had a positive return on their investment. Mostly, the issues are not technical ones (it's not that hard to get the software installed and some superficial training completed). But there are some similarities with many IT projects: Lack of agreed goals and business case "Fail to plan, plan to fail" is the old saw that is daily proved true. I've seen clients invest in new hardware and software for the wrong reasons. (Last year, one IT department wanted to buy new software to secure training for the existing team in an attempt to secure their jobs and enhance their CVs...) Resist the temptation to launch into a new technology implementation without knowing realistically what you expect to get out of it. Not Orwell vs Huxley; but Orwell-Huxley

Orwell famously provided a disturbing view of the future in 1984 where the state controlled by Big Brother rules by fear through surveillance that removes all privacy, mind-numbing propaganda (' Newspeak ') and censorship to remove independent thought. It's usually seen as a diatribe against Stalinism . Huxley wrote Brave New World depicting a world where science and technology maximize pleasure, and all of life (including sex) is about 24/7 consumption. In his essay on Western society, Amusing Ourselves to Death , Neil Postman argued that Huxley, not Orwell, had been right. Certainly the casual observer of modern Western culture would find it easy to argue that hedonism rules much of our decision making.
